Misson TX Dealers Ben and Oscar Cavazos, MAE Power
Business of the Year 2008

MAE Power Equipment, Inc. was recipient of this year's Family-Owned Business of the Year award for the Lower Rio Grande Valley District of the SBA. The Mission family-owned business is owned and operated by Ben Cavazos and son
Oscar Cavazos.

Under Cavazos' leadership, the company has not only survived for over 50 years, but has become a thriving success. The family-operated business now has 15 employees and boasts annual sales of just under $3 million. Ben Cavazos has never lost focus on the importance of not just running a successful business, but of giving back to the community. His commitment is reflected in an impressive resume of community service which starts with 52 years of involvement with the chamber of commerce where he has served as a director and vice-president. He was charter member and president of the Mission Jaycees, a 45-year member and president of Mission Kiwanis Club, and a past director of the Valley Chamber of Commerce.

He has served on many city and community boards, including Mission Community Development Advisory Board, Texas Citrus Fiesta, Bridge Board, Tax Equalization Board and Mission Economic Development Authority.

He also is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Catholic War Veterans. Still very involved in the community, he is now serving his fourth term on the governing board of Mission Regional Medical Center.

The community has recognized him with the Man of the Year Award in 1980 and Mr. Mission Award in 1984. This March Cavazos was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame during Border Fest.

MAE Power Equipment was the recipient of Yard & Garden's 2004 Dealer in Excellence Award and recently received the Small Business Achievement Award from the National Federation of Independent Business and the U.S. Senate

Oscar Cavazos has brought new ideas and new energy to the business. As general manager, he takes care of much of the day-to-day operations of the business. He also has been able to help guide the company in new directions without losing sight of its history.

One significant change was adopting a new name for the business—MAE Power Equipment (formerly Mission Auto Electric) to better reflect current product lines. The change in name was marketed in a year-long 50th anniversary advertising campaign, helping to firmly position the company in the Valley's market a leading dealer of commercial power
